Frequently Asked Questions

What is the society?

From SCS’s founding in 1952, the Society has guided the vision and mission of the school. As laid out in the Articles of Incorporation, the Society is responsible for approving the annual budget, electing the Board of Directors, and voting on other major decisions that shape the present and future of SCS. The Board, made up of four or more Society members, does the detailed work of shaping policies that support SCS’s vision. Through SCS’s Head of School they ensure that the school’s day to day plans and activities fulfill the school’s purpose and mission.

Who makes up the Society?

From SCS’s founding in 1952, the Society has guided the vision and mission of the school. As laid out in the Articles of Incorporation, the Society is responsible for approving the annual budget, electing the Board of Directors, and voting on other major decisions that shape the present and future of SCS. The Board, made up of four or more Society members, does the detailed work of shaping policies that support SCS’s vision. Through SCS’s Head of School they ensure that the school’s day to day plans and activities fulfill the school’s purpose and mission.

Why is the school governed by a Society?

SCS’s leadership structure is a direct reflection of the school’s philosophy of Christian education. We believe that God entrusts children to their parents to raise them to know and glorify Him. The school exists to serve parents in this high calling, continuing the spiritual formation, character development, and shaping of gifts and talents that starts in the home.

Children thrive when the family, school, and church partner together, and the school’s governance model reflects this understanding. Having a society of parents, grandparents, and community members who are deeply committed to Christian education keeps the stewardship of the school in the hands of those it exists to serve.

What is a Society Meeting?

Society meetings are open to the whole SCS community, and we encourage every parent to attend. They take place in the fall, winter, and spring in the evening on campus and over Zoom. This is where all community members and Society members can hear updates about the school’s health and mission and give guiding input to aspects such as finance, curriculum, programs, and building and grounds. These meetings are also where we conduct official Society business such as electing new Board members and voting on the budget.

What are the benefits to being a Society member?

Attending SCS’s Society meetings is the best way to be informed about the inner workings of the school. These meetings are also a great way to connect with parents, teachers, and staff beyond your own students’ classes. As a Society member, you have a voice in important decisions that sustain and shape SCS; and you have a vote. Most importantly, society members make a meaningful contribution to SCS for their own children and future generations.

My name is Chris, and I am proud to be a Shoreline Christian parent. I have two daughters attending SCS and three boys who will be attending when they are old enough for preschool. My wife Briana (Bauman, SCS alumna) and I reside in Shoreline within walking distance of the school. I was born and raised in California and attended Christian school from kindergarten through high school. I have a bachelors and masters in industrial engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and an MBA from the University of Washington. I work as an engineering manager in Everett.

I joined the Shoreline Christian Board of Directors in early 2021 to help ensure that SCS continues to be a blessing to students, staff, and families for decades to come. I am excited to be a part of this community and am excited for the future of the school.

My husband, Leland, and I have 3 boys currently at SCS – Ben (12), Peter (11) and Matthew (8).  After struggling at our previous school (as everyone did) through the Spring of 2020, we started searching for an in-person option. We knew several families at  SCS that really loved it, and the more we learned about the school’s approach to learning, the community, and the opportunities our kids could have through SCS, the more certain we became about making the transition. We have never looked back. All three of our kids have flourished in their own unique ways —ways in which we did not even know they were lacking before—and we have come to love the friendships we and the kids have made.

I especially treasure that our kids have a place to learn about God from people who love Him and to ask their honest questions in a place that encourages curiosity with grace and eagerness. Leland and I both grew up in public schools but met at Wheaton College, a Christian college in Illinois, that valued integrating faith and learning. We started our family back in Maryland, where I grew up, and then transplanted to Seattle in 2012 when Leland accepted a faculty position teaching philosophy at Seattle Pacific University. Over the past 10 years, I have learned the  value of friends who are like family, who will pray with and for our kids.

My professional background is in Sociology and Econometrics. I earned a master’s and a PhD in Public Policy from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and now work full-time from home for Abt Associates, a firm that evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of federal social programs. I have experience directing large projects, analyzing large datasets, finding  patterns, and looking at problems from multiple perspectives.

Navigating an education that is integrated with faith can sometimes be fraught these days, but I see SCS doing it faithfully and humbly. I look forward to opportunities to serve this community because of how much it has meant to our family and because of the joy that comes from joining with what God is already doing in and through the school.

I am a 3rd generation Board member, and I have been a part of the SCS Community for almost 30 years. I graduated from SCS in 2006, and now my son goes to Kindergarten here. I was very excited to be able to send my son to this school, which was so important for my own education, growth, and faith. This community has been important to me and my family for generations, and I am proud to serve on the Board and help this school continue to thrive and provide quality Christian education for the next generation.

I have a Bachelor’s degree from Calvin College and a Master’s from Oregon State University. My background is in conservation genetics, and I work at the University of Washington in the Genome Sciences Department as a lab technician, studying the genetics of Autism and genomic evolution of Great Apes. I live in Seattle with my husband Eric and our two kids. I’m excited to serve this school and get to know as many families as possible!

My name is Aaron, my wife is Torian, and we are the parents of 3 energetic kids. When we aren’t busy taking them to and from school and soccer, we can be spotted biking all over the roads and paths in Seattle. When I can find the time, I will use any excuse I can to get out in creation: hiking, running, camping, or simply just being. I am a Grand Rapids native and Calvin University Alum.

I work as a Systems Engineering Manager at Novanta, a global technology company specializing in photonics, precision motion, and medical devices. Before moving to the Seattle area in 2013, I worked in aerospace in the South Bay of Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles, I was heavily involved in my church community, volunteering in community projects like the Compton Initiative, a project mobilizing volunteers to beautify homes, schools, and churches on quarterly workdays. I also studied at the University of Southern California and received my Master’s in Electrical Engineering.

Torian and I now worship at a church plant in the University District called Church on the Ave. While being in a church plant requires all sorts of plugging holes and filling gaps, I am the most heavily involved in the worship team where I enjoy playing the guitar.

My husband, Brendan, and I met at church and still attend 22 years later. Our family of 6 lives in Northeast Seattle, and we are delighted that we joined the SCS community where we feel seen, safe, and loved. I am a former professional ballet dancer, a writer, and speaker with a degree in Human Resource Management from the UW Foster School of Business.
I am involved in several church ministries, love working with children, and serve on the board for Bell Tower Counseling, a non-profit, evidence-based, Biblically-sound mental health clinic. I have served in fundraising chair and presidential roles for Sixth Day Dance, worked in administration for the Pacific Northwest Ballet, and successfully directed a capital campaign for Trinity Church Seattle. Event planning, communications, and creative storytelling  are my strong suits. My writing and speaking have appeared on SCARY MOMMY, THE  MIGHTY, FATHOM MAGAZINE, KUOW, THE MOTH RADIO HOUR, and my first book, The Almost Dancer.

My wife Emily and I have three daughters at SCS, two in ninth grade and one in second. I am the pastor of a local Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Edmonds, and have spent almost all of my life living in the Edmonds area. I received my BA in Ministry Leadership from Northwest University and a Master of Arts in Leadership, Theology, and Society from Regent College. I have worked in management for the Safeway Corporation, started and ran my own Home Services company, and worked in pastoral ministry for the past 13 years.

I believe that SCS is a special place. From the moment we toured the school, I knew that I wanted our children to be here. I am especially impressed with the staff, how they relate to each other and to the students. I believe that healthy Christian organizations have a great opportunity to witness to the kingdom of God in how they operate, how they treat their employees, and how they care for each person that participates with them. Much of my study has been focused around organizational health and actively creating healthy cultures in churches and other organizations. I am a creative thinker and problem solver, an excellent communicator, and an activator who enjoys working in teams.

My name is Roma Reyes-Cambronero, and my husband is Obet Cambronero. We are blessed with one son who is currently in 3rd grade at Shoreline Christian School. Although we met in Seattle, Obet and I were both born in Manila, Philippines. At very young ages our families immigrated to the United States. We consider ourselves as true Washingtonians as we both completed elementary, high school, and college in Seattle. I obtained my Doctorate’s degree in Advanced Nursing Practice from the University of Washington and am currently practicing at UW Medicine’s Post-Acute Care Services. In addition, I teach in the capacity of preceptor for advance nurse practice students for UW and Seattle University Schools of Nursing. Most recently I was part of a healthcare team that worked with local nursing homes and the Department of Health in navigating care during the recent pandemic.

We currently reside in Everett and are members at New Life Church. Prior to moving to Everett, we served in a small church in Seatac, the Filipino Christian Church. I served as part of the leadership team and treasurer. As parents, what is most important is for our son to grow knowing God’s love. SCS has been a major partner in instilling biblical foundations in our son. SCS supports his academic growth and provides a sense of belonging where he can flourish as God intends him to be.

What I hope to offer the board is a perspective through a lens of someone of my background and experience. I bring my skills as problem solver, collaborator, communicator and educator. I I am pleased to serve in whatever capacity is needed.

My family has been a part of SCS for a few years now. My daughters Elise and Gloria are in the  elementary classes and the youngest, Pearl, will join them in a few years. I love what I see from their schooling and life at SCS, and seeing it I want to help in some capacity.

I have lived in the Seattle area since attending UW (17 years) and work as a software engineer. I’ve worked at Amazon for the last 13 years. My wife, Chloe, and I have been happily married for 10 years and counting. We’ve been attending Downtown Cornerstone Church the past 8 years.

I am passionate about education and specifically what kind of education is being taught, one based solidly on our Christian faith and honoring our Savior, Creator and Sustainer as essential and central to life. I am a voracious reader and love to research and deep dive on topics like current social issues, creation and evolution, Biblical topics, etc.

I feel very strongly about creating and maintaining a Christian school that is not diluted by our passing cultural moment but stands apart and is a light on a hill. “For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

My wife Elizabeth and I live in the Wedgwood neighborhood of Seattle with our kids Charles (9th grade), Tess (7th grade), and Lucy (4th grade), who are all in their second year at SCS. They previously attended Seattle Public Schools. We were drawn to SCS’ strong Christ-centered learning, high quality of education with an ability to differentiate learning, and the strong and welcoming community between and among the educators and parents. I look forward to maintaining and growing these attributes as a board member. I grew up in a Christian home in Vancouver, BC and came to my own faith in Jesus while in high school there. I attended a mix of public and private schools in several cities in Canada as well as an international school in Hong Kong for a couple years! My wife grew up attending a Christian school that her dad was principal of (he is now a professor of education at Calvin College). Our family has attended Trinity Church Seattle for the last 8 years, where I have led elementary Sunday School classes for the last few years.

Professionally, I am Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Signify Health, which is owned by CVS, and have previously worked at startups and at Microsoft for a number of years. I have many years of experience as a business and technology manager and have several patents in my name. I studied Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. This will be my first board position.
