Navigating Futures: A Journey of Exploration and Discovery

Navigating Futures: A Journey of Exploration and Discovery

Entering adulthood is a big and sometimes overwhelming step for high school students. One important part of this journey is figuring out and planning for future careers. This Wintermission session, some of our secondary students had the opportunity to take a Career Planning class.

The goals of this class were simple:

  1. Help the students understand the importance of career planning
  2. Have students recognize some of their own strengths
  3. Explore different career options
  4. Introduce students to the vast number of career options
  5. Begin the research process of career choices

Exploring careers through interviews:

To bring real-world experiences into the classroom, students had the opportunity to listen to and interview professionals from various fields. Students heard from eight amazing guest speakers in: health care, technology, engineering, counseling, architecture, law, the startup world and entrepreneurship. Six of the speakers were SCS alumni! This first-hand exposure helped bring awareness to career paths and provide a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of people in different professions.

Student experiences and takeaways:

Here is what some of our secondary students had to say about their class:

  • “I came to understand that what I am passionate about now may not be a good viable career choice in the future.”
  • “I had no idea there were so many kinds of engineers.”
  • “I better understand the importance of selecting a career that I will enjoy.”
  • “Selecting the correct college is now more important to me.”
  • “I am now considering becoming an architect.”
  • “Becoming a counselor appears to be a much needed and very rewarding career.”

This Wintermission experience helped SCS students expand their perspectives, gain valuable insights into their strengths, and be better prepared to navigate life after Shoreline Christian School with purpose and confidence.

Thank you, Dale Kaemingk and Karen Heys for making this such an incredible, memorable class!
