In May, 1950 a group of Christian leaders discussed the formation of a Christian school. By October of that year they had
organized "The Christian Education Society of Seattle" and agreed to name the new school Calvin Christian School.
Rev. Watson Groen, who played a vital role in the organizing efforts, went to be with The Lord. The school was named Watson
Groen Christian School in his honor. In 1997, the school was renamed Shoreline Christian to more accurately reflect a mission
and a location.
The preschool/childcare is located in the basement of the First Seattle Christian Reformed church which sits adjacent to
the school's parking lot. There are three school buildings - elementary K-6 and the Jr. & Sr. High, plus the gym. The facility
also has an all-weather surfaced outdoor athletic area with the elementary playground in a forest setting. Both classroom
buildings have a library with the computer network access and there is an art room in the High School. Each upper grade is
limited to 30 students with the elementary grades to 25. Capable, committed, caring teachers are available at every grade level.
Organization
Shoreline Christian is owned and operated by the Shoreline Christian School Society, a non-profit corporation. Membership is comprised
of many parents and others interested in Christian education. Society members elect the School Board. The Board makes policy decisions,
hires the Administrator and recommends the annual budget to Society members for approval. Parents and staff serve on a number of
committees, e.g. Advancement, Admissions, Buildings and Grounds, Education, Endowment, and Finance.
25th Anniversary 1952 - 1977
At this time, we look back with gratitude to God for parents who, in many cases, truly sacrificed to give their children a
Christian education and were moved by Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not
depart from it."
Henry VanderPol, School Board President
