2016-2017 Updates

Students and Parents,

While so much of our focus seems to be invested in wrapping up the school year, there is quite of work already being done to get the 16-17 school year off to a good start. Part of this involves making a couple of changes.

Service Day: Campbell Hill Elementary Art Workshops

Post by: Diane Van Ornum, SCS Art Teacher

I met Tanita Horton at church several months ago. She had prayed for the Lord to send people to enrich the lives of "her kids”, as she is the office administrator at Campbell Hill Elementary School in Skyway. I approached her and told her that perhaps I could bring 8 students in my advisor group to do some art workshops with several of her classes, much like we had done for Service Days several years ago at Lockwood Elementary in Kenmore, which also had no art program.

New Gym Floor!

For four weeks in April Mr. B held his PE classes outdoors. No, it’s not part of a new outdoor curriculum. Actually, it was because we were given an opportunity to completely refurbish the gym floor. Since the gym was built back in the late ‘70s, the gym has been closed for a week once or twice a year for a gentle refinish. This year, thanks to a generous donation, we were able to accomplish a complete overhaul.

What’s One More?

Post by: Char DeKoekkoek, Elementary Curriculum Coordinator and SCS Parent

My husband and I have seven fantastic children.

Years ago we were asked if we would like to host an international student for a month during the summer. “Sure,” I said, “what’s one more?” "One more" started out as a college student from France, named Boris, who lived with us for a month while he did an internship at a nearby business. Another "one more" was Mario from China, and Sachie from Japan, and Eric from Korea, and Lilli from Ecuador.

2016 School Board Nominees

Huge Thank You!

We want to thank Wolter Korf, Tuvette McCroskey, and Alisha Steich for their service to the school and community. Their contributions to the board will be missed next year!

School Board Math

Historically, the School Board has been composed of 8-10 members--parents, past parents, alumni, grandparents, and/or friends of SCS. This school year we had 9 members serving. Three of those members have completed their three-year term--one will be up for re-election--and one member is stepping off the board for personal reasons. This means that we have up to 5 open spots on the board to fill for the 2016-2017 school year. Below are the nominees for you to consider. Voting will take place at the Society Meeting on May 16 @ 7:30 pm. Read more >> about 2016 School Board Nominees

Elementary Student Guides Head Up Care Kit Project

Elementary Student Guides

The elementary Student Guides program offers students an opportunity to follow Christ in servant leadership roles and to gain decision-making skills. Representatives from each grade level are elected by their classmates and meet regularly to choose and coordinate service projects for the elementary school, and to discuss and recommend solutions for issues that may arise (such as playground clean-up).

Servant-Leadership in Action

The Student Guides are in the process of coordinating their spring service project: Care Kits for Seattle's homeless people. Over the next two weeks the elementary students will be collecting items in our classrooms for these Care Kits.
