I’ve mentioned before that I have son in preschool at Shoreline Christian School; his name is John. He has a pretty great story for being only three, but that’s another blog post for another time. On Saturday morning, March 22, a mudslide hit the small town of Oso, Washington. The landslide destroyed homes, covered the highway, and blocked the north fork of the Stillaguamish River, causing flood warnings east as the river backed up, and west as they feared the mud and debris might suddenly break loose. But even more devastating was the loss of family, friends, and loved ones. As the earth settled, the state leapt into action; no one more than Darrington, the small town just east of Oso on state highway 530.
I still remember the first day of basketball practice: standing outside, talking myself into entering the gym; convincing myself that I was not coming down with a fatal stomach virus; and mostly, trying not to show how completely inept I was feeling. I still have vivid memories of the insecurities I felt the evening of my very first basketball practice when I was in 5th grade here at Shoreline Christian. And truth be told, it wasn't too different the evening of my first basketball practice as a coach when our junior high girls' basketball season started this past January. The summer before entering my junior year at SCS, I was given the opportunity to attend a short-term mission trip in Honduras, where for the first time in my life I was linguistically disadvantaged. Despite knowing only a few words in Spanish, I made Honduran friends who encouraged me to study it upon returning to the States. Abby DeKoekkoek has been chosen as the Student of the Quarter for the 2nd quarter of 2013-2014 by the faculty of Shoreline Christian School. The emphasis second quarter was on leadership.
