What Does the School Board Do?

Last Friday night we gathered for the Back to School Picnic to kick off the start of another year, to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. The Shoreline Christian School Board hosts the picnic every year. This year they served about 400 hot dogs and polish dogs! Wow - what a great turn out!

The picnic barely scratches the surface of how the SCS Board serves the school. Month after month they meet to hear reports for the various committees (Admissions, Advancement, Buildings and Grounds, Education, and Finance), a report from the Administrator, Tim Visser, and from me, the Director of Development and Marketing. Over the course of the year, they discuss significant issues facing the school.

The SCS School Board Mission is to provide strategic direction, resources, and support to ensure the SCS mission continues to thrive and is carried out. This Saturday the Board will have a day long retreat to evaluate their work on strategic planning, to understand and utilize the talents of the board, to discuss how to improve communication with our families and to spend time looking at goals for the upcoming year.

The SCS Board is made up of parents and friends of SCS who are elected by the SCS Society (the group of parents and friends of the school that run SCS) to serve a three-year term. This could be you in the future! On September 29, Board President, Tom Rietkerk and Tim Visser will be hosting a discussion on the Society Handbook. Be sure to attend to have a more active role in the direction of the school. Learn more about the Society Orientation and meet the board members on our website. And if you meet one in person, be sure to say thank you! They sacrifice a lot of time and energy serving us in this way.
